Unable to communicate with hp scanning software

After booting the printer sometimes the computer needed to be rebooted also in order to get the scan operating again. After this happened a number of times and thinking it was a defective printer I returned the printer and bought a replacement. I still have exactly the same problems with the new one. Any Ideas?
